Musings on all things Rome from Via della Mercede.
Il Marchese
A short walk from our apartment is Rome’s first amaro bar — Il Marchese. The website boasts that this is “Europe’s first dedicated amaro bar, boasting a selection of over 600 Italian labels ….” Yes, it’s a great bar — but we like it as a restaurant as well!
It’s a pretty bistro-style locale, with an inviting entrance.

Inside is an attractive and spacious place… and oh that bar is beautiful!

The beautiful bar, and a mixologist at work
We stopped by for lunch, and we were not disappointed.
Beef croquettes with green sauce to start (we shared them)
Pasta carbonara for Laura, served in a little skillet (a nice touch — they also serve half portions of pasta)
David went for the veal
Since we were at an amaro bar, we asked the mixologist to help us select a glass or two. He graciously obliged, and gave us a short, personal tutorial on amaro.
For David
And, for Laura
Ahhh ….
Our lunch started with a friendly greeting, then progressed to a pleasant server, and a good lunch. Dessert was served up by a delightful mixologist who kindly added an amaro lesson. If you like Nonino’s Amaro, be prepared for a palate opener! A lovely experience! Find it near the Ara Pacis.
