Borromini versus Bernini at Palazzo Barberini

Two names you’ll hear over and over again when reading about Rome’s Baroque architecture are Bernini (more known as a sculptor, who happened to live across the street from the apartment) and Borromini. Now, I love Bernini — a prolific and amazing sculptor as well as an architect. But put Bernini up against Borromini, and for me, it’s no contest. Borromini wins, every time.

As an example, there are two grand staircases in Palazzo Barberini. One is square, by Bernini. Yes, it’s a very nice staircase. Really.

Bernini’s staircase, with its cool shapes…

… handsome columns…

… and more handsome columns.

But, this is what Borromini does with a staircase. It’s not a very nice staircase. It’s a magical staircase.

Looking up Borromini’s curved staircase…

… where everything flows and spins…

… and twists…

… and twists some more…

… with graceful fluiditiy.

Yes, I am a nerd over staircases and floors. Rome can do that to you.

Fortunately for me, I can see what both Bernini and Borromini left in Rome just steps away from my front door, which is just one of the many reasons I am always grateful for my little neighborhood.
