Surprises on Via Veneto

One of the many things I enjoy about Rome is that sometimes you find a surprise — a juxtaposition of modern art and the Eternal City’s ancient history. On one trip, a modern art installation was at the Baths of Caracalla. On our most recent trip, the surprise was closer to home.  It was on the Via Veneto.

Running up Via Veneto were giant and bizarre sculptures by Austrian artist Erwin Wurm. At the top of the street, by the gate in the Aurelian Wall, were “Fat House” (at the top of this post) and “Big Mutter.”

Big Mutter, a giant orange hot water bottle with legs

A silver blocky coat, with legs

A pink half-man

A silver suitcase, running to catch a flight?

A giant boot

A headless man, half going the wrong way

A silver refrigerator

A giant orange boxing glove

A shopping tote, on long legs

Another weird pink guy

A briefcase

Whatever this is, looks like it fell down a flight of stairs

We had an errand to run in the neighborhood, so we’d planned on enjoying a morning cocktail at Harry’s Bar on the way. These unexpected installations made for a lovely stroll on the way to a nice cocktail. They also made for pleasant errand running that day!
