The Giorgio de Chirico House Museum

The great painter Giorgio de Chirico lived the last 30 years of his life just a few minutes away from us, at Piazza di’ Spagna, 31. The artist settled here in 1948. His metaphysical art style would greatly influence the surrealist art movement.

His house and studio have been lovingly preserved by the Giorgio and Isa de Chirico Foundation. The museum is full of his works:

Still life (detail), 1930-1940

Castor and his Horse (detail), 1947

The Thinker, 1971

Metaphysical Interior with Lifeless Sun, 1971

Hector and Andromaca, 1973

Self-portrait in a Park (detail), 1979

In the elegant apartment, it feels like the artist and his wife just stepped away for a second… even their little bar cart is still there, as if waiting for cocktails with friends.

You get a real feeling for their lifestyle and interests, as well as the artist’s drive to always create something new, even when inspired by the past. You can visit the house museum by appointment only. English-language tours are available. It can be a very intimate experience: when we went in September, we were the only ones there!
