One of the things we love about the location of the Spanish Steps Apartment is its proximity to interesting contemporary art galleries. Here are two of them we recently visited.

Fondazione Memmo is a few minutes walk away at Via della Fontanella di Borghese, 56/b. I really liked everything about this gallery — the whole look and feel, the well written information about the exhibit in Italian and English, and the friendly gallery docent. Its current exhibition “Ruine” is by the German artist Kerstin Brätsch, and there is a second exhibition (“KAYA_KOVO“) of a collaboration between Ms. Brätsch and Debo Eilers. The gallery itself is entered through a lovely little courtyard:

 

 

 

I found Ms. Brätsch’s works that used a marbling technique to be particularly interesting. When one does a close-up of these works, they are particularly gorgeous, like a colorful geode that has been cut open:

 

The KAYA_KOVO installation was in a smaller section of the gallery across the courtyard from the main gallery.  The KAYA_KOVO installation included an audio component … here’s a little video of the installation:

The second gallery visit of our day was the Rome branch of the Gagosian. It’s just a few minutes away from the Spanish Steps Apartment, a short walk up the street and a turn to the right. The current exhibit is of large mixed-media sculpture by Tatiana Trouvé. This is a compact gallery, just one small and one large room, perfect for a quick visit.

 

 

Visiting a few of Rome’s modern art galleries is definitely a great way to spend a day!
